How can nonprofits avoid common pitfalls that make them less effective? What are the 14 Commandments that every nonprofit must follow to be successful? Donald Keelan shares his unique insights on these topics and others by drawing on his fifty years of experience serving the nonprofit community.

This book represents a compendium of approximately 75 published newspaper columns that discuss the operations of nonprofits. The columns were published in Vermont newspapers between 2002 and 2018. The book is divided into four sections in order to call attention to the various topics that pertain to nonprofits: board governance, financial controls, board leadership and reporting, and general topics. I firmly believe that if board members adhere to what I have described as "The Fourteen Commandments for a Nonprofit Board Member"...nonprofit organizations will have success and sustainability.

For over fifty years Don Keelan has served the nonprofit community as an auditor, volunteer, advisor, trustee, board chair and donor. Don spent six years on the audit staff of Arthur Andersen & Co., followed by two decades with a major New York City area real estate developer. While in New York, Don served 11 years as an adjunct professor of Federal Tax Law. Don and his family have called Vermont their full-time home for the past thirty years.
